The blog has since grown to become a leading fashion destination and one of the world’s most frequented fashion blogs. We’re excited to share their journey going back to where they met to finding what the future might hold for these business besties.
Please introduce yourself.
Elle: My name is Elle Ferguson and I'm one half of what I'd like to call the dynamic duo They All Hate Us. I get to work with my best friend Tash Sefton everyday of my life where we run the world that is They All Hate Us. My start in the fashion industry was modelling. From there I studied interior design at university for five years. My first role out of uni was as the National Visual Merchandiser for global company One Teaspoon. While working there I fell in love with denim shorts which has turned out to be somewhat of a trademark. After One Teaspoon I started working as national Visual Merchandiser for General Pants where I was lucky enough to meet my business partner and partner in crime Tash. What started as a hobby is now our full time time job - grateful is an understatement.
Tash: I’m Tash Sefton co founder of They All Hate Us, co-owner of global retail e-store shop.theyallhateus and co-designer of Girl Gang by They All Hate Us. Elle and I met when working together for a large retailer over 10 years ago in their head office. Our roles intertwined and our friendship grew over a mutual love of fashion, Sex And The City and pizza. We started our website as a hobby which is now one of the most visited fashion websites in the world. I’m also a mum of two boys Jay and Mac, I have a painting business with my sister I do on the weekends, I do pilates, I’m obsessed with Outlander (a really cheesy TV show), and I really love hot chips and tomato sauce.
Share one piece of advice that has been a game changer for you in life or in business?
Elle: Have courage and be kind.
Tash: Don’t let perception fool you. And love wins.
If you could travel to one destination for inspiration, where would it be, and why?
Elle: A week-long trip around Australia. The cities we have here and the people are so inspiring. Take Melbourne for example; the fashion and style is so on point and I'd love to spend more time there.
Tash: I travel overseas a lot, however always love coming home. My husband is from Melbourne so exploring Victoria with our family has been lovely. There are places Mark has shown me that are so incredible and more unique than anywhere else.
What is your in-flight travel essential?
Elle: Paw paw cream. And a spare seat next to me!
Tash: Aveda chakra spray, hand cream, socks and my cashmere oversized cardigan I use as a blanket - I always get cold on planes.
Fashion is always evolving, how do you stay on top of trends in your industry?
Elle: I'm very true to myself so always stay true to me, but I also use our blog and am addicted to Instagram.
Tash: I try not to get caught up in the crazy trends that move so fast. Basics, denim and classics are always a priority and are the main component of my wardrobe. I also love mixing high-end designer with high street, it helps with my cash flow too!
Share something exciting on the horizon?
Elle: I have to say every single day is exciting! Something new always seems to be happening.
Tash: I can’t tell you yet...but something BIG!
What personal traits do you think are essential to ‘change the game’?
Elle: Be YOU. And work hard.
Tash: Keep true to yourself. Don’t let ego or fame drive you. Remember you are not better than anyone else.
