Fabric of Communal Bonds
Designer Alasdair MacKinnon will be operating a pop-up atelier at Testing Grounds, a space for informal and exploratory art practice, tucked away between the Arts Centre and the Australian Ballet Centre in Melbourne’s Southbank. Here he’ll be offering the public access to a working fashion/textile studio as he creates a new work that explores his interest in handmade textiles and construction related to specific garment use.
This piece is special as he is working with fabric donated by several contemporary artists whom he has built a relationship with through social media. Their input allows Alasdair to explore the emotional reactions we have to textiles, the personal stories, and attachment in each piece. This subverts the fashion norm of trend interpretation and disposability. Part of the process will involve printing the stories attached to each piece and incorporating it into the finished work.
Alasdair’s atelier is a chance to see the designer’s process laid bare.
