Fashion Meets Culture
Indigenous Runway Project has teamed up with Global Indigenous Management to produce an hour long show that showcases Global Indigenous fashion at its best. Later, join the Global Indigenous designers, creatives, models and crew to celebrate this extraordinary event.
Indigenous fashion has the power to transform any space and tell a unique story. What better way to understand this than from Indigenous designers themselves? We have gathered a collection of Indigenous designers from Australia and around the globe to showcase their fashion collections at one of Melbourne’s prestigious locations; the Goldfields Theatre, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Wharf.
We reveal a larger social truth: that influence of fashion far transcends the runway. There is little distinction between fashion and culture. Through the use of intricate, multifaceted designs and bold colours, we will reveal collections that are strongly influenced by Aboriginal culture, art, landscapes and history and are also strikingly original, especially in design. Customary woven garments and accessories will occupy the same space, while synthetic and organic materials alternate in unexpected ways.
Each designer will share their tribal stories in their bold and distinctive style while reflecting the rich diversity of Indigenous culture.
Indigenous creatives will help tell the fashion story and draw you in with their captivating performances while more than 40 Indigenous young people will strut their new found confidence on the runway as they model the best of Indigenous fashion.
This event is owned and operated by Global Indigenous Management, and proudly promoted by Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival as part of the Independent Program. Please contact the organiser directly for further information.
