Masks by Mafalda Vasconcelos
This exhibition of paintings and prints by Mafalda Vasconcelos seeks to highlight the female form through striking imagery and the juxtaposition of minimalist design with vibrant colours.
Mafalda was raised in Mozambique, where masks are important traditional elements, which are often used in ceremonies and rituals as a reference to the spirit world. Traditionally, the person using a mask sheds his or her human life and transforms into a spirit, shrouded in mystery and awe.
These and other African influences are deeply rooted within Mafalda’s style, as her collection shows women as the powerful, godlike figures that they are. Geometric shapes and lines express emotion and hint at a deeper story that lies below the aesthetic, which is not to be forgotten as the works demonstrate simple beauty amid a sense of vibrancy.
Free event, RSVP not required.
