Sanja Pahoki Limited Edition

Exhibition

Local Melbourne artist Sanja Pahoki’s exhibition in the salon at Sarah Scout Presents gallery consists of a limited edition collection of custom-made t-shirts designed to be worn at home – for no occasion – and an accompanying tongue-in-cheek advertisement.

Inspired by a period of intense study, the t-shirt designs feature simple drawings (figs) from Pahoki’s doctoral exegesis. Pahoki’s visual arts PhD, ‘Being Kazimir Malevich’, examined a profound moment that she had experienced in front of a series of paintings by the Russian painter, Kazimir Malevich, at the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.

The thesis identified the encounter as a camera-less photographic moment which expanded our understanding of photography and the theoretical concepts; punctum and aura. Figs were used throughout the exegesis to illustrate the paintings that Pahoki had witnessed and to illustrate complex ideas.
